The first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and his opponent, Donald Trump, is just hours away, and the United States election season is heating up. The Republican and Democratic nominees will square off on CNN. This is the first of at least two debates scheduled before the November 5 election.

What are the rules?

- Both candidates will stand during the debate, but Biden has requested a seat.
- Each candidate will have a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water, but no props or pre-written notes are allowed on stage.
- Unlike previous debates, microphones will be muted except when it is the candidate’s turn to speak.
- There will be no studio audience, and CNN aims to enforce timing and maintain a civilized discussion.
