Apple may not launch some upcoming AI features in EU until 2025, claiming the DMA would force compromises in data security and privacy.
Apple disappointed its EU customers by announcing the delay of some major features due to competition laws in the bloc. Announced in an email on June 21 that the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a law intended to stop Big Tech corporations from acting in an anti-competitive manner. As a result, Apple Intelligence—the company’s flagship AI feature—will not be accessible in the EU this year.
Postponement of Key Features
According to Bloomberg, Apple is postponing Share Play Screen Sharing and iPhone Mirroring, among other features.
The DMA seeks to Coerce larger companies to alter their policies. One such rule is interoperability, which mandates that major companies like Apple make sure competing services can run on their products, like iPhones. But Apple voiced concerns in a statement to several media sites that the DMA’s interoperability standards would “force us to compromise” products in a way that would affect data security and privacy.
European Commission’s Stance
European Commission said that “gatekeepers” such as Apple are free to deliver their services in Europe as long as they comply with our rules and ensure fair competition.”
Apple has been the subject of months of investigation about its DMA compliance. Earlier this year, 34 groups published an open letter claiming that Apple’s compliance recommendations contained certain parts that were not compliant with the DMA.
Investigations into DMA Compliance
Apple is currently under investigation by the EU because to suspicions that its operations violate DMA regulations. Apple’s DMA compliance procedures are being investigated in two different ways. The first looks into Apple’s “steering rules,” since there are worries that limitations on Apple’s App Store could “constrain” developers’ capacity to market offerings and directly enter into contracts.
Apple’s Market Position Amid Challenges
Despite these challenges, Apple was able to gain its ranking as the second most valuable business in the world. Behind Microsoft, with the recent revelation of new AI features. But since then, Nvidia has surpassed it; last week, it surpassed both businesses.
